A Reflective Journey into Grief: Entering the Healing Ground Workbook by Francis Weller
Prior to engaging with Francis Weller’s Entering the Healing Ground: The Wild Edge of Sorrow Official Workbook I was well aware of an intellectual/rational part of my system. I’ve come to learn that this one attempts to logically explain what I am feeling to help me feel more in control. While this can be helpful, it does have its limitations, especially when it comes to navigating grief. In his work, Weller identifies the vital importance of tapping into our imaginations to help disrupt our rational processes. We cannot simply think our way through grief; rather, we must actively attend to it with a much deeper medicine. Weller identifies this medicine as compassion, which is offered from our Soul/Self. He notes that compassion can reach the places in our systems that have become contorted by grief.
Opening up channels for compassion to flow within out individual systems is vital for healing, but Weller insists that grief work is not purely an individual process. Truly, we are not meant to journey through “The Long Dark” alone. The exercises in his workbook repeatedly gesture toward:
- Ritual space
- Connection to nature (“anima mundi”)
- Communal dimensions of sorrow
This makes his workbook feel deeper than many self-help tools, though also more demanding. This is certainly not a “light” workbook. The exercises can be emotionally intense, and without support (community, therapy, or guidance), some readers may find it hard to sustain.
As I sat with some of the prompts, I found that their simplicity was somewhat deceptive. The questions themselves are not complex, but they are carefully constructed to surface deeper emotional layers. At times, strong waves of emotion moved through my system and I silently committed to roll along with them. In his customarily poetic way, Weller identifies this process as a kind of “rhythm of the soul,” which “operates at a geologic speed.” Over time, the medicine (compassion) seeps into our systems and brings a deeper felt sense of healing. To this end, I found that Weller’s workbook resists urgency. It is not designed to be completed quickly, nor does it offer a linear progression. Grief does not work on a traditional timeline. While some sections felt immediately accessible, others required more patience and space. In some cases, I chose to step away from certain exercises and then returned to them after a time. This decision was borne out of compassion for my system and its grieving parts.
My hope is that as you move through this workbook at a pace that makes sense for your system, you will become more deeply connected to your own grieving parts and offer them the medicine (compassion) they are so in need of. In doing so, you will simultaneously become more attuned to the grief around you and bring what medicine (compassion) you can to those people and places.
Not long ago I attended a workshop with Francis Weller, and he offered participants a simple prayer in closing. May it act as an ongoing guide along your own grief journey.
“Show me how to participate fully in the highest possibilities of life, light and love.”
